Jose Mourinho has once again expressed the importance of Wayne Rooney to Manchester United after the captain has started their last four games on the bench.

United have a Europa League tie against Turkish side Fenerbache, before they travel to Mourinho’s former team Chelsea on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

It has been a slow start to the season for their skipper, but his manager was keen to stress that the former Everton player will be involved whether on the pitch or off it.

Ahead of the game this evening, he said: “Wayne is working well. He’s one of those who is responsible for the atmosphere that the players can breathe because he’s positive, he’s a good example.

“We count on him to start or be on the bench. He will be there tomorrow.”

A win over the leaders would take them to the top of Group A if other results go in their favour, despite Mourinho previously saying that the club didn’t want to be in the Europa League.

The 53-year-old will be returning to Stamford Bridge for the first time since he was sacked – for the second time – by Russian owner Roman Abramovich.
