Spanish media outlet ‘Cadena Ser’ is reporting that Real Madrid wanted to replace Rafa Benitez with former Barcelona and current Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola

Guardiola’s friend and biographer Marti Perarnau claims that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wanted Guardiola to take over when former manager Rafael Benitez was sacked in January.

“Real Madrid called Pep Guardiola to try and tempt him last November, before they sacked Benitez,” he told Cadena Ser.

“Madrid contacted [Josep Maria] Orobitg, Guardiola’s agent, in order to try and contract him. But from the start it was out of the question. I was there”.

It appears that the attempt to appoint Guardiola was somewhat audacious given his connections with Barcelona, but it would have been interesting to see his reception at the Bernabeu…
